Case Study 3 LG Therma Air to Water Heatpump Installation with Oversized Radiators

Heatpump Upgrade from Electric Panel Heaters

Mr & Mrs G contacted us to see what energy saving solution we could offer to upgrade the heating system in their bungalow.

The current heating was supplied by electric panel heaters which barely kept the property warm during the winter months. The hot water was supplied from an immersion fed hot water cylinder fed from a tank in the roof, with electric showers in the main bathroom and en-suite.

We opted for an LG Therma 9kw air to water heatpump which we sited in the front courtyard, side on, to reduce the visual impact but far enough away from the boundary fence to pass a noise calculation.

The heatpump was floor mounted and sat on rubber mounting feet 300mm off the wall to allow for good air flow around the unit. Insulated pipework was taken up the outside of the building and into the roof space and over to the cylinder location. External pipework was encased within trunking.

The water pressure was high enough to upgrade the existing hot water cylinder to a pressurised type, removing the need for the cold water storage tank in the roof space.

The existing cylinder cupboard although reasonably wide, was not very deep. We overcame this by using a slimline heatpump cylinder which fitted snugly into the space.

Oversized radiators were fitted into all rooms within the property, each controlled by its own thermostatic radiator valve except in the hallway.

The time and temperature control for the heatpump system is from a digital programmable room thermostat sited within the hallway.

Finally a 25ltr buffer vessel was fitted within the roof space and connected into the heating pipework. This is used to ensure minimum system volume is maintained at all times and is required when thermostatically controlling radiators.

Whilst installing the heating system, we disconnected and removed the existing electric showers, replacing them with modern thermostatic high pressure shower valves.

Finally, as we are an MCS Accredited Installer, the homeowners can also benefit from the Government RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) grant.

Mr G said;

“We're really happy with the new system. Everything seems to be working well. Steve and Craig have done a sterling job. They were extremely patient working around a house full of people - and an inquisitive young puppy - in difficult circumstances and were always extremely professional. We're very grateful to them and to you and very happy that we made the decision to ask AMS to install the system”
